چکیده
Warren Knudson, Ph.D. Department of Biochemistry Rush University Medical Center Chicago, IL 60612 USA [email protected] Warren Knudson obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1981 working in the laboratory of Dr. Edward Conrad. Following postdoctoral study in Dr. Bryan Toole’s laboratory, where his interest in hyaluronan began, he joined the faculty at Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1985. Currently, he is the Associate Chairman and an endowed Professor of Biochemistry at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. W. Knudson’s area of interest concerns the overall metabolism of hyaluronan. His laboratory has explored the expression and function of hyaluronan synthases, hyaluronidases and the hyaluronan receptor CD44 in articular chondrocytes as well as a variety of model cell lines. Most of the work is aimed at addressing underlying defects in hyaluronan metabolism associated with osteoarthritis. The current focus of the laboratory concerns the internalization and degradation of hyaluronan via CD44, how this mechanism is regulated and how this mechanism coordinates with CD44 signaling, hyaluronan synthase activity and lysosomal hyaluronidase expression. Dr. W. Knudson works closely with Dr. Cheryl B. Knudson especially in the area of CD44 and cellmatrix interactions.

متن کاملThe Quantification of Glycosaminoglycans: A Comparison of HPLC, Carbazole, and Alcian Blue Methods.
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are linear polysaccharides that are found in the extracellular matrix and biological fluids of animals where they interact with hundreds of proteins and perform a variety of critical roles. There are five classes of animal GAGs: heparan sulfate (HS), chondroitin sulfate (CS), dermatan sulfate (DS), keratan sulfate (KS), and hyaluronan (HA). Many biological functions ca...

متن کاملGlycosylation of Amino Acids and Efficient Synthesis of Glycosphingolipids
Glycoscience is an emerging field of science that focuses on the study of the structure, biosynthesis, biology, and evolution of saccharides (sugars). It covers a broad range of subjects including microwave-assisted synthesis as well as sphingolipid synthesis. In this field, knowledge is limited due to the complexity of carbohydrates and their derivatives. Therefore, it is all the more importan...

Giant Unilamellar Vesicles (GUVs) consisting in self-closed lipid bilayers of 0.5-100 µm diameter are considered as oversimplified models of cells because of their biological membrane and micrometric size while Large Unilamellar Vesicles (LUVs) of 100-500 nm diameter have applications in drug delivery. To improve structural and mechanical properties of these vesicles, we have developed two cate...
